Visually too, everything seemed per the rose-tinted memory of the original. I briefly switched back to the “purist” version, a clunky single stick system that relies almost entirely on lock-on aiming as the game did in 2002. It took a while for me to recognize that it was the result of a mechanical overhaul, adding in dual-stick shooter controls that all modern gamers are familiar with (and ironically introduced by this game’s direct competitor, 2001’s Halo). It felt like I was speed running a game I didn’t know I knew so well I was suddenly like Jason Bourne, an amnesiac savant of gaming. After booting up the game for the first time in 20 years, I was able to tear through the first quarter in a trance-like haze, acting almost entirely on muscle memory. And what a beautifully facsimiled memory it is. Visually and mechanically, it does the thing that’s so fashionable these days: Looking and playing as you remember the original, not the way it was. The 2002 version brought the world of Metroid to life in spectacular fashion and this remaster improves it in every possible way. Handwringing aside, there’s much to celebrate about this version of Prime. The game offers a bonus gallery that will delight all Samus fans, and numerous control options for everyone to enjoy, which is also a very good point for the game in terms of accessibility.Few first-person games have ever been as immersive as Prime with its in-visor HUD. I’ve never played it again in all this time, but the Switch is giving me the chance, so I’m not going to shy away! This remaster ticks all the boxes in fact, it’s more like a remake. Metroid Prime is a legendary game, with a 97/100 rating on Metacritic in 2003, one of those games that revolutionized the genre, a metroidvania with a 3D, FPS twist, offering a crazy gamedesign, dynamic combat, well-balanced difficulty, art direction that was really up to scratch, a scenario that wasn’t neglected… everything was excellent. The good old days of the Gamecube, that atypical purple cube on the hunt for the PS2 and Xbox and their 3D games that forced Nintendo to take risks and modernize their major licenses: zelda, mario, or, well… Metroid. The addition of new features and improvements further enhance the overall experience, making it a true joy to play. The gameplay remains as captivating as ever, blending exploration, puzzle-solving, and intense combat in seamless and interconnected environments. The sound design and music have been beautifully remastered, heightening the sense of tension and adventure as you explore the mysterious depths of the planet. The intuitive motion controls on the Nintendo Switch bring an unprecedented level of precision to Samus Aran’s movements and combat, making the experience even more immersive and engaging. The remastered graphics breathe new life into the atmospheric world of Tallon IV, with detailed environments and immersive lighting effects that add depth and realism. The game perfectly captures the essence of the original Metroid Prime while elevating it with stunning visuals, enhanced controls, and refined gameplay mechanics. Metroid Prime Remastered is an absolute triumph that revitalizes a beloved classic for a new generation of players.
